I recently posted this on my Facebook page:

Soundtrack of your life? If you had to pick 10 songs that fit you perfectly….what would you pick??

Here are mine:
1. The Time of My Life by Bill Medley & Jennifer Warren (I listed this in my journal back in ’94)
2. At Last by Etta James – (My wedding song)
3. I’ll Stand by You by The Pretenders – (VERY special song to me)
4. Through My Prayers by The Avett Brothers – (No words)
5. Special Angel by Bobby Helms – (Another VERY special song)
6. Unwritten by Natasha Beddingfield – (preferably sung by Gidge)
7. I’m Coming Home by Robert Earl Keen – (Hubs was deployed and I listened to this on heavy rotation.)
8. Just a Girl by No Doubt – What girl DOESN’T relate??
9. In the Meantime by Spacehog – I will FOREVER think of my sis when I hear this one.
10. Pride & Joy by Stevie Ray Vaughn – Because simple….he is BAD ASS!!

But I haven’t been able to let it go, so I decided to go a little further into the WHY of my choice for these songs. So here it goes:

  1. The Time of My life by Bill Medley & Jennifer Warren. When I was about 18, Ally McBeal was a new show on Fox. I immediately fell in love with the quirky lead and her insane imagination. I had moved out of my parent’s house and was living alone…talking to myself. (Often) I was always a fan of Dirty Dancing, and always loved the song, but something about choosing a theme song for my life caught my attention and I noted it in my journal. For years, that song was on heavy rotation….in my head.
  2. At Last by Etta James. I don’t think we really had a “song” at the time we got married. I was a huge fan of old music. I scoured the internet for ideas of possible wedding songs, and none of them worked for me. I mean…NONE! I’m not sure how it happened, but I found this Etta James song, that I’d heard millions of times before, and fell in love. I don’t think I even told him what our song was until the wedding day. But even now, when I hear it (or play it) it brings the biggest smile to my face.
  3. I’ll Stand by You by The Pretenders. Do you remember that dark day in high school? The one where you thought no one understood? The one where you felt so incredibly alone and scared that there was no way out? I do. That was my senior year. Depression was something I hadn’t experienced before and it hit me hard. So hard, that my mom found me a therapist that I saw only twice and quit when I felt her “advice” to me was total and utter bullshit. BUT, my mom got it. She knew. She was there for me and tried to help me in the lowest point I had experienced up to that point. She had no word, but she had music. This song. This song brought me to my knees in tears and I knew that my mom loved me more than anything. (As if I didn’t already know.)
  4. Through My Prayers by The Avett Brothers. I know we all have dark times. And times where someone slips away before we can tell them what we feel. It’s a real and true fear that someone might leave our lives without every truly knowing everything. I have cried and smiled to this song because it touches on so many feelings for me. It gives me comfort and strength to push. It’s sad to know that we are more concerned or worried for others than they ever will be for us. But you have to stay true to you…whatever that it. ❤
  5. Special Angel by Bobby Helms. This was the song I danced to at my wedding with my dad. I cried. I had to idea what song he chose and it still means so much to me. It’s one that, for years, I sang to my own daughters to help get them to bed. It just makes me smile.
  6. Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. I will FOREVER love this song because Gidge fell in love with this song when she was 5. She would sing it all the time, even with messed up words. We have a video of her singing when she thought no one would listen. As she’s gotten older, I think she’s realized the power of these words and they’ve certainly become a staple for me.
  7. I’m Coming Home by Robert Earl Keen. O.M.G. Tears. So many tears. It was 11 years ago that my husband deployed leaving me alone with an almost 2 year old and a barely 3 month old. I learned strength unlike I’ve ever known during this time. I learned the meaning of love. I learned so much about myself, but his words were always there cheering me on. My husband KNEW I could do it, and I wanted to prove him right…so I did what I had to do for my girls and for him….mostly for myself. I would listen to this song because it was his love song to me. And when he returned 6 months later, I took him to see REK at the Norva in VA and he thanked REK for his words.
  8. Just a Girl by No Doubt. BEST. DAMN. GIRL POWER song. This was my anthem in high school and beyond. There are some songs that never age and this is one of them.
  9. In the Meantime by Spacehog. Okay, so this may seem like an odd song to have listen, BUT there’s a reason. In high school I had ONE boyfriend and we broke up senior year. Every weekend in the summer, my sister and I (and MAYBE another friend) would head to Galveston. We’d drive up and down the seawall in her Tacoma with the sunroof open BLARING music. This song was sure to play and every time I hear it, I think of her. (Have you read MTL??? It’s in there!!)
  10. Pride & Joy by Stevie Ray Vaughn. There is NO explanation necessary. I love all of his music.

So there you have it. My “explanation” for my top 10. What are your top 10 songs??

Authority Love Part 3…

Black lips

Okay, I’m winding this down. I could go on every week about the different women who inspire me, but then I’d never get a break because there are so many. So. Many.

These ladies I have had the pleasure of reading their works, as well as talking about various topics. I feel blessed to know them and be able to call them friends.

So let’s get this going!

Author: Lori Otto
Why: My friend Lisa had been going on and on about “Lori Otto” and how wonderful her books are. She kept telling me that I needed to read and I wanted to, so bad! We both attended Penned Con this year and I finally got to meet Lori. If you haven’t met her, you’d love her. And if you have met her…you totally know what I’m talking about. She’s so quiet, yet sweet and funny….and we text. I texted her often while reading and then again while we commiserated about headaches and Parenthood (the show, not the job) LOL. I think Parenthood bonded us.

Favorite Book: I read Lost & Found this fall and I absolutely loved it. My girls were at school and it was a non-writing day, so I finally got to read. It was one of those books where I couldn’t stop smiling, and yet I was yelling – out loud. Thank God I was alone. I have yet to read the next, though I am dying to and t’s queued up and ready to go.

Author: Erin Noelle
Why: I met Erin a year ago at Houston Author Bash. My friend Chew had read her Book Boyfriend Series and loved it, especially since it was set in Houston. Oddly enough, I learned we had a mutual acquaintance, which is the reason I talked to her in the first place. Erin cracks me up. Her laugh can get everyone going and I’m lucky to say that I get to see her almost every week when we meet up with Kathryn Falk of RT Book Reviews, Kayla Robichaux, Sierra Cartwright and Barbara Blue.

Favorite Book(s): I’ve read Translucent and loved it. Erin is a wonderful story teller, but the book I’m still dying to read, that I haven’t yet – her Book Boyfriend Series. I keep hearing how good it is, and I just HAVE to read it!

Author: Kahlen Aymes
Why: Kahlen and I became friends online. Like so many others, we would chat about books, marketing, trends and everything else. Kahlen is a very smart woman and I enjoy hearing what she has to say. This is another one that I got to meet at Penned Con! Meeting her in person was like walking up to someone I’ve known forever. She’s so sweet and I love her outspoken nature. ❤

Favorite Book:  The Future of Our Past. Ryan and Julia. I mean, what else can I say. I got butterflies for these two.

Author: Beth Caplin
Why: Beth. What can I say about my sweet, funny friend? I’mont sure how it was that we got to messaging online, but I’m so glad it happened. We’ve exchanged WIPs and talked out plot lines and possible hiccups along the way. I respect this woman so much because she knows what she stands for and refuses to compromise to follow popular standards. I think that’s rare in this world. I can’t wait until the day that I FINALLY get to meet her.

Favorite Book:  The book that she has coming out may be my favorite. It’s not out yet, but as soon as it is – I WILL be sharing!! ❤

Thank you again so much for checking out this list. Again, it’s not everyone that I love and respect in the author world….but I’m actually running late for a meeting…so I gotta jet.

Next week….SPRING BREAK!! I wonder what will post during that week????

Authorly Love Part 2…

Welcome back!!! I moved this post to Wednesday instead of Thursday for a Woman Crush Wednesday bit. ❤

I love talking about the authors I love. Some, I have never read their books, but on a personal level, I admire the hell out them. There are so many books to read that I can’t keep up AND keep writing. Unfortunately since publishing, my reading quantity has gone down drastically. But I read when I can!

Anyway, last week I shared 5 amazing women and why I love them! Today I have 5 more to share with you. Are you ready?!?

Again, in no particular order….

Author: Stacey Lynn
Why: Another woman who is special to me! We have been friends for over a year and she’s been a huge help in shaping my books. I always look forward to her feedback and suggestions because she’s funny as hell! Seriously. Again, another one of those…is she as nice in real life??? YES! She is. We got to hang out back in November when she was in Houston and I swear it was as if I’ve known her forever. I admire her writing ability so much. She’s a powerhouse! *Superstar*

Favorite Book(s): My first Stacey Lynn book was Remembering Us and it’s still my favorite to this day. It was one that I fully immersed myself in and didn’t want it to end. She also has the Nordic Lords MC books and I have read every one of those. I enjoyed the fast-pace and suspense of where the story was going. And she knows my thoughts on certain characters. ❤ LOL

Author: Claire C. Riley
Why: I love Claire because she has a sexy accent. Haha! Kidding. I mean, it’s AWESOME, but she is fantastic. This is another one that I am dying to meet IRL, but for now, our Facebook voice messages and occasional pics will have to suffice. I have gone to Claire numerous times with story situations that don’t seem to mesh, only to have her make a suggestion that fixes everything. And on a personal level, Claire is a wonderful human being with the biggest damn heart. ❤

Favorite Book(s): Okay, so I’m going to admit here and now that I don’t like reading scary things because….well, they scare me. Ha! BUT…I read her book Odium and it was so freaking awesome! I mean, Nina is kick-ass! Side note: my youngest and I had debates about zombies so she read it too. I am now being pressured by my kid to get around to the second book by this summer so she can read it. And if you haven’t read Thicker Than Blood, the book she co-wrote with Madeline Sheehan…you really should!

Author: Penny Reid
Why: Peeeeennnnnnaaaaaaayyyyyy!! Yep, I shouted that. Penny was one of the first authors I had the pleasure of meeting at the first signing I did (1 year ago). You talk about smart? Holy crap!! Penny is pretty freaking cool. I love how her mind works and the things that she does for the author community. I don’t know many people who celebrate other authors the way Penny does. She’s quirky and funny to be around and I don’t think there’s any way to be serious in her presence….she won’t allow it. 😛

Favorite Book:  Love Hacked. It was the first book of her that I read and it was incredibly smart and witty. So much that, if my husband was a reader, I think he would really enjoy it!

Author: Brittainy C. Cherry
Why: Because she’s just so cute! Okay, but that’s not the only reason. Positivity. That’s what I love about Britt. I have watched her success, especially after Loving Mr. Daniels, and it’s very cool to see the things that are happening for her. Britt isn’t drama…in fact, she stays away from it, always responding with a smile. And she loves her family, so much! I love seeing things with her mom and little brother (and her other family members) because you can tell they are her world, and it’s beautiful. 😎

Favorite Book:  Loving Mr. Daniels. Those damn letters had me in tears every.single.time! And let me just say, I was already bawling within the first few chapters.

Author: Kelsie Leverich
Her smile. Seriously, have you seen that smile?! Kelsie is as beautiful outside as she is inside. We’ve had a few group skype sessions and she’s so damn cute I don’t know what to do. LOL. Kels is one of those authors who can tell a story so seamlessly and draw you in. I admire her for so many reason, but I think the thing I love the most is her devotion and attention to her kids and her family. That and you get her and Stacey on and skype with a glass of wine and laugh until someone has to go. 🙂

Favorite Book: The Valentine’s Arrangement. I love Ronnie and Kale’s story. Ronnie is that woman that’s so cool, you want to meet her in real life…and Kale, he’s just plain hot.

Okay, so that’s all for Woman Crush Wednesday this week. Remember to check back next week to see who else I want to chat about.
